Protecting our Sovereignity
January 26, is the day India was declared a Sovereign, Democratic, Republic. It is the day when the nation comes together to celebrate the spirit of democracy and freedom. NDF would like to give thanks to all those who have supported us in our mission of protecting  the essence of our Republic, by upholding civil and human rights, and promoting  rich diversity of our beloved country, India. Fascism had threatened to undermine the core of our Republic and its constitutional insitutions.  As we reflect back, let us come together in hopes for peace and justice through our entire life.

Celebrations across the country make us feel enthused, energized and patriotic all over again. Political rhetoric, majestic parades, colorful tableaus, songs and dances and a spate of patriotic effusion in the mass media – all this will capture our collective imagination for a few hours or days. And then it will be back to the normal rut of life and living.

Is patriotism only about fighting at the borders of the country, sacrificing one’s life? Can patriotism not be reflected in little acts by caring and respecting our own citizens?  Is patriotism only a value that has to be bandied on certain days and in certain ways?

Azad, Nehru and Gandhi
Gandhi, Nehru and Maulana Azad
The sacrifices and heroic role of Indian Muslims  in the freedom struggle  is almost ignored by many. It was an irony that the 'madrasas' which made all kind of sacrifices for the freedom of the country were being dubbed as centres of terrorism by fascist forces with the support of main stream media.

We wish every success to "Thejas Daily", which will be launching on our 57th Republic Day, 26th January 2006.  We hope it will provide a media framework though which, oppressed people can channel their efforts towards a unified and collective voice.
